What is an MSG file?
MSG is the format Microsoft Outlook uses when you save or drag an email out of classic Outlook for Windows. It holds the message, its formatting, embedded images and attachments in a single file. Many people receive .msg files from colleagues, lawyers or support teams and can’t open them without Outlook. Converting to PDF makes them readable anywhere and easy to archive.
What you get in each PDF
- The subject as a title, followed by From, To, Cc, Date and the list of attachments.
- The message body with its formatting, links and inline images such as logos and signatures.
- Searchable text you can select and copy, page numbers, and a file name that starts with the email’s date.
How to save an email as .msg in Outlook
In classic Outlook for Windows, drag an email from the message list to your desktop or a folder, or open it and chooseFile › Save As with Outlook Message Format – Unicode. Both create a .msg file. To save an email as PDF straight from Outlook instead, see our Outlook to PDF guide.
Your privacy
Outlook files often contain contracts, HR matters and client details. This tool never uploads them: everything happens inside this browser tab, and the data is gone when you close it. Remote images are blocked unless you turn them on. Read theprivacy policy for details.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Outlook installed to convert MSG files?
No. The converter reads .msg files directly in your browser, so it works on a Mac, a Chromebook or any computer without Outlook.
Are my emails uploaded?
No. Your .msg files are opened and converted by JavaScript running on your own device. Nothing is sent to our servers, which matters for work email, legal files and anything confidential.
Are attachments included?
Each PDF lists every attachment by name and size under the email header, and images placed inside the message body appear in the PDF. You can also download each attachment from the file list. Attachment contents are not merged into the PDF.
Can I convert many MSG files at once?
Yes. Drop in as many files as you like. Download one PDF per email as a ZIP file, or combine them into a single PDF in date order, with each email starting on a new page.
Does it work with emails in Chinese, Japanese or other languages?
Yes. The converter decodes older Outlook files that use regional code pages as well as modern Unicode ones. For emails with non-Latin text, use “Print to PDF”, which uses your system fonts to keep every character.
What about calendar invites and contacts saved as .msg?
Outlook also uses .msg for meetings, contacts and notes. These convert too, with their subject and notes, but details like meeting times or phone numbers are not laid out as a form.
I have .eml files instead. Does that work?
Yes, this converter accepts both. You can also use our dedicated EML to PDF page.
