How to add page numbers and a draft watermark to a PDF

Number a report and label it DRAFT with a text watermark. Choose footer placement and opacity without covering important content.

Quick answer: Add page numbers to your final combined document, download it, then open that result in Watermark PDF and add a light DRAFT label.

Finish merging and reordering before numbering

Page numbers reflect the document order when you process it. If you merge or rearrange sections afterward, printed numbering may be out of sequence. Complete those changes first, then choose the final PDF in Add Page Numbers.

Set Starting number to 1, or use another value to continue an existing sequence. Choose the left, center or right footer position. Every page receives a number, including covers and blank pages; there is no skip-cover option.

Leave enough room in the footer

The tool draws numbers over the existing page without pushing content upward. Check that tables, footnotes and existing page numbers do not occupy the selected footer position.

Select Add page numbers and then Download PDF. Open the result and check both portrait and landscape pages. Starting number changes the visible number sequence, not internal PDF page labels.

Add a readable watermark

Choose the numbered result in Watermark PDF. Enter DRAFT or another short label using basic Latin characters. Begin with a 48-point size and 15% or 30% opacity, then adjust if the label is hard to see or obscures text.

Select Add watermark, download the file and inspect dense pages as well as mostly blank pages. A watermark labels the document visually. It does not encrypt the file, prevent copying or securely remove underlying information.

Troubleshooting

The watermark text is rejected

Use 1–100 basic Latin characters. This version does not support Chinese text, emoji or other characters outside that set. Keep the label short for better readability.

Frequently asked questions

Can a solid watermark hide confidential information?

No. Text and images underneath remain in the PDF and may be extracted. Use a dedicated redaction tool when information must be permanently removed.
